History

Built as the new home for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Ford Auditorium was placed according to Saarinen’s original Civic Center plan.  This very simple structure did little to disguise its primary function. Poor acoustics eventually led to the return of the DSO to their original home at Orchestra Hall in 1989.  Sadly, the building has sat vacant ever since and finally demolished in July 2011.

    Hello,
I attended a Sunday service at the Ford Auditorium in the spring of 1977. I was young and I don’t remember the name of the spiritual guru in white robes and white beard who headed the service. How can I find out his name? Where can I find records of the events there that spring?

I’d really appreciate any help you can provide. I’ve been wondering this for many years.

    Sincerely,
    Nancy
